de tragische fout van linguïstisch imperialisme

Voor Lolling and Rolling (2015) verdiepte Jaha Koo zich in het fenomeen van de tongriemoperaties, een ingreep die in Zuid-Korea wordt uitgevoerd om de Engelse tongpunt-r te kunnen uitspreken. Hiermee raakte hij het linguïstisch imperialisme in zijn geboorteland aan. Anno 2021 herwerkte Koo deze voorstelling, omdat hij niet langer alleen het linguïstische aspect – slechts het tipje van de ijsberg – wilde belichten. In de live performance onderzoekt hij nu ook het uitgebreidere proces dat ermee gepaard gaat en dat de ‘subaltern’, de minderheden, monddood tracht te maken. Het ontkennen of devalueren van een taal instigeert namelijk ook de teloorgang van een identiteit, van een minderheid, van een bevolkingsgroep. Zij worden op die manier niet alleen linguïstisch maar ook cultureel gekoloniseerd.
Lolling and Rolling is het eerste deel van Jaha Koo’s Hamartia Trilogy. Samen met Cuckoo en The History of Korean Western Theatre bestaat de trilogie uit drie intelligente documentaire theatervoorstellingen die elk op zich een verhaal vertellen over ‘hamartia’, Grieks voor ‘tragische fout’. Rode draad hierin is het verregaande imperialisme van vroeger en nu, en de soms onverwachte persoonlijke impact ervan. Telkens verweeft Jaha Koo zijn persoonlijke verhalen met historische, politieke en sociologische feiten. Vaak thematieken die een clash van de oosterse en de westerse cultuur in zich dragen: van het knippen van tongriemen om het te kunnen maken in het Westen, tot de zware persoonlijke tol van westerse bemoeienissen op macro-economisch vlak.
For Lolling and Rolling (2015) Jaha Koo delved into the phenomenon of lingual frenulum surgery, a procedure performed in South Korea to be able to pronounce the English rolling 'r'. In doing so he touched on linguistic imperialism in his native country. In 2021, Koo reworked this performance, because he no longer wanted to just highlight the linguistic aspect - the tip of the iceberg. In the live performance he now also investigates the more extensive process that accompanies it which tries to silence the 'subaltern', the minorities. Denying or devaluing a language also instigates the loss of an identity, of a minority, of a population group. In this way they are colonized not only linguistically but also culturally.
Lolling and Rolling is the first part of Jaha Koo's Hamartia Trilogy. Together with Cuckoo and The History of Korean Western Theatre, the trilogy consists of three intelligent documentary theater performances, each telling a story about 'hamartia', Greek for 'tragic mistake'. The common thread here is the far-reaching imperialism of the past and present, and its sometimes unexpected personal impact. Jaha Koo always interweaves his personal stories with historical, political and sociological facts. Often themes that involve a clash of Eastern and Western culture: from cutting tongues to make it in the West, to the heavy personal toll of Western interference on a macro-economic level.
