Het Parool portrays Cherish Menzo in the context of FRANK

Cherish Menzo
Laetitia Bica

'Cherish Menzo has given the dance world a new impetus in recent years. Her performance FRANK, the culmination of a triptych about the black body and colonial legacy, is a physical exploration of the monstrous.'

Gina Miroula wrote a portrait of Cherish for Het Parool and spoke with her dramaturgical sparring partner Renée Copraij, performance artist Khadija El Kharraz Alami, and choreographer and co-founder of GRIP Jan Martens.

For Martens, FRANK is exemplary of Menzo’s style. “She investigates what happens when you question the body’s limits. She uses techniques from hip-hop, like 'chopped and screwed', where movements are slowed down and repeated. She translates that into dance: angular and intense. Even the face participates. No mask, but expression. She makes political themes tangible through pure physicality.”

FRANK will be performed on July 9 & 10 at Julidans in Amsterdam and on September 24 & 25 during Feeling Curious? in Rotterdam. In 2026, the performance will tour across the country.
