About us

“These times of multiple global social, societal and political crises demand international solidarity and local roots, multivocality, and greater responsibility from a city company like Theater Utrecht. I'm very proud to continue building, together with these six creators, a company that brings genuine, full-fledged, and radically politically urgent stories to the world, always striving for the greatest possible impact.”

- Anne Breure, Creatief Directeur, Theater Utrecht

Mission

We dedicate ourselves to

Theater Utrecht is a multivocal, disruptive, and passionate city theatre company. Together with our team of makers, artists, and creatives, we create innovative and thought-provoking performing arts. In our productions, we radically question the world around us and bring underexposed topics to center stage.

Our venue on Boorstraat is our home base: a place for programming, research, and development, where we invite the city to engage in dialogue and exchange. Deeply rooted locally and connected internationally, we challenge our audiences to reflect with us on the times we live in.

We dedicate ourselves to

Provocative and innovative theater: Producing performances that challenge and renew the audience.

Broadening the audience: Attracting a more diverse and younger audience.

Development of the cultural field: Stimulating innovation and growth within the sector.

Creation with and in the city: Involving the city of Utrecht in our productions and collaborations.

Centre for Performing Arts

In April 2025, we moved to a new house: Boorstraat 107 in Utrecht. At this location, we are building a distinctive venue, where the doors are always open. Where there's ample space for local talent and internationally distinguished performing artists. Where there's continuous cross-pollination between artists, audiences, and the community. We are building a strong foundation from which we can reach out to the Netherlands and the world.

Theater Utrecht - Centre for Performing Arts has two auditoriums and three studios. Want to learn more about renting these auditoriums and studios?

De Paardenkathedraal

Before we moved to the Boorstraat, De Paardenkathedraal was home to Theater Utrecht. This is where we rehearsed and organized various activities. Now, De Paardenkathedraal primarily provides a space for Utrecht colleagues and other cultural partners to showcase their work, including DOX, the Early Music Festival, De Dansers, Tweetakt, HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, ArtEZ University of the Arts, and Het Filiaal theater makers.
