The second chapter of the Dantean trilogy on femicide

In this second part of her Dantesk trilogy, theatre maker Carolina Bianchi (Brazil, 1988) disconcertingly exposes how power systems facilitate and normalise sexual violence. Together with the collective Cara de Cavalo, Bianchi explores the origins of brotherhood and the often violent 'codes of brotherhood' between men that come with it.

What does 'masculinity' mean? What’s the appeal of 'the brotherhood'? And who is part of this pact? Don’t expect answers, but rather a head-on confrontation with patriarchal structures and our role in maintaining them. Bianchi links representation to real trauma and power structures within art with radical poetry, and explores how misogyny and a sexuality crisis play off each other. The piece unfolds like a trap: as Bianchi uncovers the brotherhood, she herself becomes a character who suffers the consequences of her view on this system.

The Brotherhood triggers strong emotions, presses where it hurts, and has us reflect on the role violence plays in our society and the ways we help perpetuate it, whether we're aware of it or not.

Carolina Bianchi has been one of the core artistic members of Theater Utrecht since 2025. Following a residency at Theater Utrecht in December 2024, The Brotherhood will premiere in May 2025 at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels and will be presented from 18 to 20 June at the Holland Festival.

The performance is in Portuguese and has Dutch and has English surtitles.
