An ode to Surinamese queer legacy

The story of Suriname is incomplete without its queer legacy. In the premiere of A COMING OF (R)AGE RITUAL, multidisciplinary storyteller XILLAN explores this heritage and their dreams of a new future.

Inspired by writer Edgar Cairo—who called himself the second Black son of God—an intimate ritual unfolds in which three voices collide: Edgar’s loud voice, XILLAN’s own doubting self, and a menacing God who tries to silence them. Through text, music, and imagery, XILLAN pays tribute to forgotten queer heroes—a liberating act for all who are still searching for their place.
