How can you stay fair in an unfair system within a world that’s constantly changing with a shrinking field of work and a shaky economy? What does fair pay and entrepreneurship mean in a time when everything is expensive?

As a maker, you’re often expected to be entrepreneurial. A common phrase you hear: “See this as an investment for the future.”
But how far can you go with that “investment” when you still have rent to pay?
And what does solidarity mean if you have the privilege to (be able to) invest more?

Together, we explore where the line lies between entrepreneurship and unpaid labor.
Because honestly — what the fuck is an “investment,” and when is it actually fair?

There’s plenty to talk about. From all our perspectives: as emerging theatre makers, funds, organizations, and institutions.
Together, we look for answers — and new proposals.

What the fuck is fair? #1 took place in November 2024 at Over het IJ, in collaboration with ENT, and focused on new makers and fair pay.

What the fuck is fair? is a collaboration between Theater Utrecht, Festival Cement, ENT (Ensemble Nieuwe Theaterwerker), and Platform Horizon.
