Sjenk (14+)
Theater Utrecht in coproduction with DOX

Stories of life on the streets: protect yourself and everything that's yours. An explosion of music and sharp lyrics take over the theater in Sjenk. Theater maker Gavin-Viano draws inspiration from drill rap, a music movement and culture where surrendering to peer pressure often leads to violence within the community.
In Sjenk, we meet three schoolmates who make music together and dream of a big breakthrough. When, while shooting a drill rap video, they find themselves in a conflict over its style, impact, and consequences, the filming spirals out of control. One of the three uses framing and shaming to get the threatening music video aired. Because with such a video, you get more shine, more money, and more street credibility.
Then you're supposedly truly part of the drill rap scene, with all the consequences that entails. Sjenk presents a manipulative game in which three young people constantly push themselves to their limits. How can you stay true to your own principles? Do you succumb to peer pressure, and what do you do when you encounter it? Do you remain silent or do you speak up?
The performance uses strobe lighting. It also features scenes with violence, explicit language, and (fake) weapons.
Please note: Sjenk is an interactive youth performance (14+). Certainly interesting for adults, but we recommend seeing this performance with a young person!
