Samina De Wulf, Toneelacademie Maastricht – Performance

Leaving the noise.

This research started from the notion of sonic weapons used in war, and shifted to sound as a weapon to speak up against. As a protest. My woman's voice can scream so loud. Yet nobody listens. So I explored the explosive potential of sound. But instead I imploded more and more.

For MORE BIT MY TEETH, Eko (Samina De Wulf) explored sound as protest, resistance and inner eruption. She weaved together topics on the female voice, sound weapons, hysteria, black holes, sexual assault and implosions.

Moving nomadically between spaces and landscapes, working on the ENCI terrain became a big part in this process. From their studio in the Stofkruid office to the industrial shed — and often outside among the rocks of the former quarry — the environment itself became part of the work. Materials found on site sparked new sonic possibilities. Tubes, objects, fragments — each carrying its own texture, resonance and history.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Samina De Wulf (b. 2000) is a Belgian artist living in the Netherlands. In 2024 they graduated from Kask en Conservatory in Fine Arts: Performance, and in 2026 from the Academy of Performance Art Maastricht. Their work explores different media, always revolving around a fascination with sound.

Samina started as a dancer in pre dance school for contemporary dance and ballet, where choreographic inspiration consistently came from experimental music. Pauline Oliveros, Delia Derbyshire, Ryoji Ikeda and Aphex Twin have been the backbone of their practice. Today Samina works as an autodidact musician on both digital platforms and in acoustic spaces, not creating choreographies for dancers, but creating choreographies in sound. Another key part of their practice is building their own instruments from wood, wool and found objects.

In 2025 Samina created an alter ego called Eko: a gender bending personage born from drag, carrying the meaning of an ecotone - a transitional zone where different communities meet and integrate. That space of coexisting is where Eko belongs.
